Brief Artist Bio Focusing on painting but also using a wide array of mediums. ST Bycroft creates abstract and surreal images with bright contrasting colors and forms. The purpose of each art work is to cause a pause and some thought and to bring to mind the question: 'What is that?'. He has some traditional training in painting and drawing but is basically self taught. During a 35 plus year career in the systems and finance fields, ST Bycroft produced art on a personal level, occasionally showing his work in juried shows or art guilds in the New England area. Since retiring to the southwest he is now pursuing his art full time.

I also do recording and writing, but I am not a professional Musician or Writer and fall squarely in the hobbyist / amateur category for each. See below for info / link to examples of each.
On Music / Soundscapes: I took formal Guitar lessons for seven years, which I believe gave me a better appreciation of many types of music. Although I'm not sure it gave me a better ability since I have no natural talent with music. But it did teach me how much work must go into creating music. Growing up, and still today, I listen to the standard (now classic) rock of The Beatles, Hendrix, The Doors, Pink Floyd, ELP, etc. Later on, I found Jazz and listen to the likes of Charlie Christian, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. By then, I had a makeshift recording studio at home and was doing a lot of electronic sound experimenting. Although the ability may be limited I did play all of the instrument for each track recorded. I also realized I enjoyed the engineering, overdubbing, mixing of sounds more then the playing of a traditional instrument. This led me to the Brain Eno, Robert Fripp, Laurie Anderson, Jean Michel Jarre type of music, which I often listen to now and what my recordings emulate. For many, this type of soundscaping is an 'acquired taste' but hopefully you will find something of interest or maybe even something you really like.

On Writing: When Dorothy Parker said, "I hate writing, I love having written.", I'm sure her statement applied to many. It certainly applies to me. I hate writing, it's damn hard work. But just like the painting or music, I have ideas in my head about a story and want to create it. That means writing it down. Writing and language, in general, are not necessarily my best points, but after it's written and re-written I think the idea can be expressed. It runs the gamut of what I like, but I lean toward epic type tales like Homer or Tolkien, or Satire, whether dark Orwellian or crazy / maddening funny Heller. But, my favorite still falls to Science Fiction (hence; my paintings or music). Again the gamut is read but with a preference for the more classic type of H.G. Wells or Asimov.

I have also been exploring system Fractal generators and system image editors. Below is a link with some repeting GIFs files I created of some of them.

I also upload selected images to Instagram and Flickr. Some are the same as on this site some are different.

Related to this web site: Selected items will be updated on this site as new work is done. The main 'Home' page does randomly display images and will automatically change. Although, I worked in systems I was not a web developer, which is a specialized skill. I could have used one of the 'canned' web site services but found them too limited in ability. I could have used one of the content management packages but found them too cumbersome. So, with the use of many shareware sources, I wrote the code myself. If you find that this web site is not working quite right or you find bugs (especially on mobile devices with the audio page in particular), oh well, it is by a an artist and now a retired system hobbyist / amateur, not a professional.
Enjoy.
